Which Nicotine is For You?

One of the most common questions we receive from people new to vaping is, “what kind of nicotine should I get”? This is understandable as words like “freebase” and “nicotine salts” are used among seasoned vapers without providing context for someone new to vaping or DIY mixing. River Supply Co. is a leading manufacturer of blended nicotine and chances are if you have vaped a commercial juice, you may have actually vaped our PurNic™ Nicotine. Unfortunately, there is no “one size fit all” approach to determining what nicotine blend and strength is right for you, but we can try to break down the options available in our PurNic™ blends to set you on the right path.

The Basics of Freebase Nicotine

Freebase nicotine is the purest form of diluted nicotine and the closest sensational comparison to traditional cigarettes. When blended with a diluent (VG or PG) and mixed with flavor concentrates, freebase nicotine is the most common form of nicotine used in commercial e-liquid. You will generally find freebase nicotine in lower milligram strength juice (12mg and below) as freebase nicotine can be quite harsh and unpleasant to vape at higher milligram strengths. If you’re looking for amazing flavor and big vapor clouds freebase nicotine with a powerful device is the way to go.

The Basics of Salt Nicotine

If you consider yourself a heavy smoker, you might want to begin vaping with salt nicotine. Salt nicotine is freebase nicotine (in its natural state) that has been formulated with proprietary USP Grade ingredients to alter the nicotine’s natural pH level. This allows the user to vape at higher milligram strengths without an unpleasant throat hit or taste. Best used in less powerful or pod-type devices, salt nicotine can deliver more nicotine with each inhale, reducing the need to vape frequently. Although salt nicotine can be vaped in larger and more powerful devices, smaller pod devices are recommended as they yield consistently low wattage. A high wattage device may add excessive heat to the salt ingredients, causing potential harm to the consumer.

Smooth or Hit Salts?

River Supply Co. has two different types of salt nicotine available for people who want to mix their own e-liquid. Our PurNic™ Smooth Salts can be vaped at up to 50mg in nicotine strength without the presence of a throat hit and the experience is exactly as the name suggests offering the user a smooth vape at higher milligram strengths that will not interfere with flavor. When transitioning from cigarettes to vaping some smokers actually prefer a slight throat hit still with high milligram content, replicating the effect of smoking a cigarette. If this appeals to you, our PurNic™ Hit Salts, when mixed at higher strengths, will deliver a slight throat hit to the user without an unpleasant harshness of freebase nicotine. Ultimately providing more nicotine to the consumer with minimal harshness, but keeping the throat hit at comparable level to freebase nicotine.
